A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

Was it the fresh scent of pepper spray, the spinning of DJ Technic or the glamorous outfits that made NYE  so special?

The last day of 2011 began for DJ Technic with the recording of his new mixtape, while I was designing the cover. Since Technic had to open the NYE party in Safari Lounge (Harlem, NYC), we had to make sure we left on time. While he was spinning his last songs on the background, I was already getting ready. With his baby aka “backpack with his music Mac”, on his shoulders and my comfy UGG’s on, we left the Bronx for Harlem.

After a few stops on the D-train we arrived at the location. Since the last time Technic played at this spot, was in the summer, we were not sure which way to go. We walked into a street, which first looked like a “I’m gonna beat u up if u don’t watch it..” street, till we saw the few bouncers in front of the door, so we knew  we were at the right spot.

Technic emptied his backpack and turned the empty little room into a real DJ booth. He started off with some nice and smooth R&B and since it was a little slow in the beginning, we had time to take some snaps. A good thing we did, especially if you know how the party ended.

Safari Lounge started to get crowded at 11:30pm and the fancy girls with the glitter outfits (read: glitter bathing suits or dresses that were 2 sizes too small for some) accompanied their boo, who wore some fur coats and shades. The big fellas or should I say “Rick Ross look-a –likes” took in the most part of the VIP scene. Bottles were popping and Technic changed the smooth 90’s for some sexy dance songs. Since Technic was the only DJ till 1:oo am, he played different music  for every type of crowd, so everybody could shake some ass. And so they did! Girls were rubbing their asses against their new catch, like they had to get some stains out of their pants.

Technic was rocking the party and before we knew we all were shouting Happy New Year and kissing each other. It was all joy and then the shout outs began. No idea what we got ourselves into, Technic started to shout out a few people that wrote their name on napkins, to shout out themselves, friends and there was even a lil marriage proposal included. It all started with 1 nice shout out, but it ended with having to close the door of the DJ booth, cuz the line for shout outs and requests got too crazy. Meanwhile Technic got back-up from a few other DJ’s, but no matter what they played or how long they played, there’s only one DJ Technic and that’s also what everybody in the club noticed. No other DJ got free drinks and compliments from the crowd. It was a great and successful night and an awesome beginning of 2012. At least that was what we thought…

Around 4:30 am, after getting the crowd all excited and dancing wild, it was time again for some smooth R&B or the well-known sex-songs.  But there was no sweet vibe in the club tho. The mixed crowd of black people and Spanish people caused an unhealthy tension and soon I saw chairs, bottles and tables flying in the air. What started off as a little fight escaladed to a big cloud of pepper spray that made everybody leave the building. For me, the soft European, it was my 1st meeting with Mr. pepper spray.  A few minutes later, we got flashlights in our faces and cops asking if we were doing ok. After putting his  DJ-equipment away, all covered with white dust, we walked out of the club on a carpet of broken glass. Fortunately we got home safe, but this was def a night to remember. Despite the “not-so-happy ending”, we had a great time thanks to DJ Technic, who rocked the party and made everybody dance like crazy!
